The Board approved the 2017 State Legislative Program on January 24, 2016. As approved, the legislative program includes a legislative proposal concerning the regulation of firearms, weapons and ammunition in treatment facilities. In addition, the approved 2017 State Fundamental Principles also includes a similar statement on firearm regulation.
The objective of this item is to add a priority statement regarding "Firearms Regulation", as requested at the January 31, 2017, Joint Commission/Delegation workshop, to the County's 2017 State Legislative program. If approved the following statement will be added to the program's priorities:
The Board supports legislation allowing local governments to regulate firearms in government owned buildings and facilities. The Board further supports legislation prohibiting the possession of firearms, weapons, and ammunition in substance abuse programs, mental health programs, and sexual assault treatment facilities.
The Board opposes legislation allowing individuals with concealed-weapons licenses to open-carry firearms on college and university campuses; at state legislative and cabinet meetings; governing board meetings of counties, cities, school boards, special districts; and in courthouses.
